Today we are interviewing Tom M. A software engineer student. Be sure to check our interview with a female student in the engineering field that will be posted tomorrow!
So Tom, Please tell us about yourself
My name is Tom M. I am 21 years old and I’m starting my third year in software engineering
Why did you choose this field?
From a young age, I loved the computer. I was on the computer the whole day! I even remember staying up all night just to get extra playing hours of “Need for Speed” – it was such fun!
What do you like in this field?
I guess I just really like to program. Big Data in another topic that draws my attention. I really like this field because it gives you the power to create a change without the limitation of the physical world. In the software world, specifically in the IT field, the sky is the limit – Each and every one of us are equal, it is only a matter of what you do with your knowledge

So, what do you dislike about this field?
One of the things which I hate the most is Debugging! (For those of you who are not familiar – debugging is when you check your code quality for errors, warning etc). To just stare at a computer all day, trying to find mistakes in my or other peoples code just drive me crazy, it is really not my thing – I hate it! But I guess that there are people out there who enjoy it…
Are you busy with your studies?
Yes, I am very busy. There are moments when I just think to quit and go on vacation but my thirst to knowledge overcome this urge haha…
Are you able to fit social life in your daily schedule?
Actually, yeah! I blend a lot of social life in my schedule but unfortunately, it does show in my grades
How are you able to manage both study life and social life?
Well, The secret to that is just keeping a really tight schedule. As long as I follow my schedule, everything is fine!
Truth time! Are you just in for the money or out of pure intres?
I guess that a little bit of both. It is fun to work in a field that inspires you but also stabilizes you financially. Someone once told me to not mix business with pleasure – I did not listen to him.
As a third-year student, What are you ambitions to this year?
Well I really look forward to expending my knowledge in the field I want to work in, and even start working in it.
But Tom, social life, student life and a job?! How will you have time to do all?
In the third year there is much less pressure from the University, but if I won’t have a choice, I will cut down of my social life.
Ok, last question – What course did you like the most, and which one did you hate the most?
haha, nice question. I guess the best course I’ve taken is Algorithms. I’ve learned a lot of different algorithms and how do they work – fascinating filed in my opinion! The course which I suffered the most was without a doubt calculus. I think it is unnecessary to my field. It did not expend my knowledge in the fields I wanted to do so and I would totally give it up
Thank you for your time Tom, goodbye!
What about you folks? Got a question to Tom – write down in the comments and maybe he will write you back!
